Sarajevo Sketch and Paint Tour: Draw the City with a Local Illustrator

Most tours give you Sarajevo to look at. This one gives you Sarajevo to draw. You choose three locations from a curated list — an Ottoman fortress, a bridge with a spiral in its centre, a 15th-century mosque, a neo-Moorish city hall — and at each one, you sit down and sketch it. Your guide is a working illustrator who grew up here. They’ll show you how to look at a building before you draw it, tell you its story while you do, and make sure you leave each location with something worth keeping. All materials are provided. No experience is required.
Urban sketching is the practice of drawing places as you find them — outdoors, in real time, with the sounds and light of the city around you. It slows you down in a way that photographs can’t. When you draw a minaret, you have to look at it for several minutes, and you notice things a camera misses. Sarajevo is one of the most visually layered cities in Europe, and this tour was built around that fact.
Before the tour starts, you choose three locations from the five below. At each one, you spend up to 45 minutes sketching and painting with guidance — technique hints, compositional suggestions, historical context. Between locations, the walk itself is its own short tour: Sarajevo’s streets are full of things to point at, and your guide knows all of them. Refreshments are included along the way, and the pace is unhurried throughout.
At the end of three hours, you have a sketchbook with three drawings of Sarajevo made by you, in the places themselves. Most guests say it’s the souvenir they were most glad to have — not a photograph taken of something, but a record of actually looking at it. The quality of the drawing matters far less than the quality of the attention, and your guide’s job is to help you pay that attention.
