Roots & Remembrance: A half-day walk through survival, memory, and belonging.
Sarajevo has been home to Jewish communities since the 16th century, when Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain found refuge here — welcomed in a way much of Europe refused to offer. This half-day tour traces that unbroken thread, from the oldest synagogue in the Balkans to a cemetery that holds five centuries of stories. It is not a history lesson. It is a conversation with the past that still echoes today.
Over three to four hours, you will visit the Jewish Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the grand Ashkenazi Synagogue, the Kal Grande — the Great Sephardic Synagogue — and the historic Jewish Cemetery on the hillside above the city. Where possible, the tour includes a viewing of the Sarajevo Haggadah, one of the oldest and most traveled Jewish manuscripts in the world — a book that survived the Inquisition, World War II, and the siege of Sarajevo itself.
